Statement from Chairman Aguilar and Vice Chairman Ted Lieu on Retirement Announcement of Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi
WASHINGTON, D.C. – Today, House Democratic Caucus Chair Pete Aguilar and Vice Chair Ted Lieu released the following statement on Speaker Emerita Nancy Pelosi's announcement that she will not seek another term in the U.S. House of Representatives:
“There is no doubt about it: Nancy Pelosi is the greatest Speaker in American history.
“For nearly 40 years, she has been a patriotic leader for not just Californians, but all Americans – and that won’t stop with her retirement from Congress. At the center of her motivation has been improving the lives of women and children and strengthening our world for future generations. Speaker Pelosi is a life-long fighter for equal rights as well as the voting rights for all Americans. She has worked tirelessly to bring more women into the ranks of the House and ensured that our Democratic party truly reflects the American people we represent.
“As she often says, she does this work for the children. Her accomplishments are countless. Speaker Pelosi has expertly guided House Democrats through tumultuous and uncertain times. Throughout her 20 years in House Leadership, she deftly navigated the 2008 economic crisis, the global COVID-19 pandemic, a violent insurrection on the Capitol, and multiple Democratic and Republican administrations, all with grace and strength.
“Even with the most narrow margins, she has united our party in passing historic achievements that have changed the United States for the better. From the Ryan White CARE Act to ensure treatment for HIV/AIDS; the Affordable Care Act to give Americans access to quality, affordable health care; to the Inflation Reduction Act to lower costs for Americans and the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law to improve our nation’s infrastructure, it’s impossible to overstate the lasting impact she has had on our nation and the American people.
“She has also been a mentor to House Democrats from every corner of the country. As fellow Californians, we will especially miss her presence in our delegation.
“Speaker Pelosi has proven herself to be an icon, a legend, and one of the best American political leaders the United States has ever seen. We couldn’t think of a better way for her to announce this next chapter than on the heels of a successful California redistricting effort to fight back against Donald Trump’s attempts to rig the 2026 midterm elections. This victory, and so many others over the years, have been made possible because of her involvement.
