Statement from Chairman Aguilar on the Republicans' sham January 6th Committee
WASHINGTON, D.C. – House Democratic Caucus Chair Pete Aguilar released the following statement on House Republicans voting to create a new subcommittee to investigate the January 6th attack:
“The facts of January 6, 2021 are clear: Donald Trump incited a violent insurrection in an effort to steal the 2020 election. As a result, people were brutally injured and lost their lives, including Capitol Police officers who serve and protect us every day.
“Then this year, in one of his first acts as President, Donald Trump pardoned those same violent criminals who beat law enforcement officers within an inch of their lives and released them back into our communities. This included criminals who have been re-arrested on charges that include child pornography and attempting to assassinate FBI agents.
“Now today, House Republicans voted to create a new subcommittee on January 6 in an attempt to rewrite history and the horrific events of that day. In fact, this entirely hyper-partisan panel will be led by a House Republican who is on video giving tours to rioters the day before they stormed the U.S. Capitol. This is an unserious effort about an incredibly serious day. The best way forward when it comes to this day is to ensure it never happens again, and that we fully honor the law enforcement officers who died as a result of this violent mob. It’s time for Speaker Johnson to comply with the law and finally display the memorial to those police who died to protect us on that harrowing day.”
